What We Thought

I’ve slept on, and owned every type of camp bed you can think of. From sleeping on the thinnest, cheapest, most ineffectual roll mat, to super luxurious 10 cm SIMS, double-height air beds, and even fishing beds.

I like to be comfortable when I sleep, and I also prefer to be raised off the ground. Air beds are fine and do the job, but generally, they deflate over night and need to be replaced frequently.  So I made the switch to folding camp beds many years ago, and have since stuck to using a double camp bed with our double Outwell SIM on top.

On solo camping trips a double bed is overkill (even for me), so I decided it was time to invest in something that was smaller to transport than my single fishing bed, and also quick to put up.  So I chose the Kampa Dometic Dream XL Camp Bed.

Previously, I’ve owned folding camp beds with aluminum poles that need slotting in place at the foot and head of the bed, which is often easier said than done and almost always required me to call on the help of someone as they can require a fair bit of strength to slot in place.  So this time, I wanted a bed that didn’t need any poles slotting in and would simply require folding out.

The Ultimate Guide To The Best Camping Beds, Air Mattresses & SIMs

The camp bed is SO fast to assemble. You just slide it out of the bag and open it up. It takes perhaps 20 seconds to take it out of the bag and fold the legs out. Once it’s up, it feels incredibly sturdy.

One of the first things I noticed was that it was a good few inches taller than other similar camp beds I’ve used, which I really liked, providing me with loads of storage space under the bed so I could keep my tent looking tidy.

For added comfort – I always pop a SIM on top of a camp bed, so I used my 7″ Jack Wolfskin Cosy Rest SIM on top. It’s wider than a typical single SIM, but there were still gaps of a couple of inches on either side, once on the generously sized Dream XL.

  • Really good quality bed
  • Extremely fast and easy to assemble and take down again
  • A little taller than the average camp bed
  • The extra width makes for higher levels of comfort
  • A good sturdy bed that doesn’t move around or feel rickety
  • High-quality carry bag
  • Good value for money

  • It’s a little heavier to carry than other single folding camp beds I’ve owned

The verdict

Our Rating

Quality 5/5

Practicality 5/5

Looks 5/5

Value 5/5

Overall Rating 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

I slept incredibly well on the bed. It felt strong – highly stable too, and I felt like I could sit anywhere on the bed without worrying about it tipping up.

The extra height makes it really easy to get in and out of the bed, so it would be great for folks with reduced mobility – and with the addition of a SIM, I think it makes a brilliant and incredibly comfortable camp bed choice. Although for some, the camp bed alone will be sufficient.

I paid £53 for mine, including express next day delivery and am very happy with my purchase. I would thoroughly recommend the bed in terms of quality, practicality and value.
